Hypatia of Alexandria
Hypatia was the last great philosopher, scientist and educator of Alexandria, Egypt. In 415 AD, Hypatia was brutally murdered by a band of fanatic Christian monks. Her death marked the end of the city's role as the world's great center of learning and the beginning of the Dark Ages. Hypatia stands as an icon for the pursuit of enlightenment even when aggressive ignorance threatens to squelch its flame. This watercolor painting is available for purchase.
